What you’ll be working on?

We are partnering with an established game development studio based in Sofia, Bulgaria, to support the development of exciting gaming experiences across multiple genres and platforms.

As a Technical Animator, you will contribute to the development and optimization of animation systems, character rigs, pipelines, and tools that support both gameplay and cinematic experiences. You will work closely with animators, artists, designers, and engineers to ensure animation assets integrate seamlessly into the game while maintaining performance and quality standards.

Your work will play a crucial role in improving workflows, solving complex technical challenges, and enabling the team to deliver polished and immersive experiences to players worldwide.

Please note: This is an on-site role based in Sofia, Bulgaria. You will be working from our partner’s office and collaborating closely with the local development team.

Your Role

As a Technical Animator, you will serve as the bridge between the animation and engineering disciplines.

Your responsibilities will include developing and maintaining character rigs, creating animation tools and workflows, supporting animation integration into game engines, troubleshooting technical issues, and optimizing animation systems for performance.

You will collaborate closely with animators, character artists, gameplay programmers, and technical artists to ensure that creative vision is realized efficiently and at the highest quality.

You will also help establish best practices, improve production pipelines, and contribute to the overall technical direction of animation systems within the project.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional experience as a Technical Animator, Technical Artist, or similar role in game development
  • Strong understanding of character rigging, skinning, and animation workflows
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine
  • Strong knowledge of animation systems, state machines, blend trees, IK/FK systems, and procedural animation techniques
  • Experience creating animation tools and workflow improvements
  • Scripting experience with Python, C#, or similar languages
  • Experience collaborating closely with animation, art, and engineering teams
  • Understanding of performance optimization for animation systems
  • Experience troubleshooting rigging, deformation, and animation integration issues
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git or Perforce
  • Experience with Maya and its scripting tools
  • Experience with motion capture pipelines
  • Experience with facial rigging and facial animation systems
  • Knowledge of physics-based animation techniques
  • Experience developing custom tools for artists and animators
  • Experience working on shipped PC, console, or mobile titles
  • Familiarity with procedural animation and runtime rigging solutions
  • Understanding of shaders, technical art workflows, and character pipelines

What does the interview process look like?

  1. Initial Interview: We’ll start with a friendly 45-minute cultural and technical interview. Two members of our team will assess your cultural fit, past experience, and technical expertise, discuss the major challenges you’ve tackled, and explore your ideal work environment.
  2. You can choose between two Technical Deep Dive options:
    1. Portfolio & Technical Review: We’ll review your previous work, animation systems, rigs, tools, and pipelines you’ve contributed to, followed by a technical discussion with the team.
    2. Practical Technical Session: Participate in a collaborative technical exercise focused on problem-solving, animation workflows, and pipeline-related challenges.
